Super Why's in a Movie to teach Kids about Going Green!

I've been a little confused about whether this movie is already playing and have finally found out that YES it is playing on Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of April at the Rave in Peoria. I'm so psyched. Alyssa ADORES Super Why and also Word World, who's characters join Super Why in this full length feature film called Earth Days. Its centered on introducing toddlers and preschoolers to the idea of taking good care of our planet. So, I'm thinking Mommy/Daughter date! :) Really, it's a win/win. We get to spend quality fun time together without the hustle and bustle of the weekdays. And, I get to introduce my three year old to Going Green. Pretty cool, huh?

So, here's my question for you...how do you introduce the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle to your kids? Have you found something that works better at one age than another? Please let me know and you could win a way to go green yourself. The first 25 people who post a comment to today's blog entry will receive a 91.5 WCIC reusable grocery bag/tote. Super cool, huh? And, we just might use your ideas on the air next week!

So, send us your ideas and tell your super GREEN friends about it, too! And, maybe I'll see YOU at the movies! Have a great weekend, my friend! :0)

Thanks for the FYI on the movie. That is exciting to know. I think I will take my nephew to it for his birthday.

One great thing for kids is to give them their own Sigg bottle. They can fill that up instead of using plastic bottles. Check them out online, they have some really cute designs for both kids and adults. They are a Thumbs Up for the earth and your health.

I think to go green one has to set a good example. When you recycle something, your kid will see that. Also, the movie Wall.E is a good movie that teaches kids to be smart about recycling.

Thanks for the great information!!

Sounds like a great movie with a great concept.
We live on a farm and we try to "Go Green" as much as possible. We recycle our paper, plastic, cans, and cardboard by taking them weekly to the recycling center in our town. Also we reduce the amount of scrap food that gets thrown into our trash can by feeding it to our chickens, turkeys, & ducks! We also take our own refillable water bottles with us when we go out so we don't buy sodas and throw the plastic bottle away. Not only does this keep the plastic bottles out of the trash but also keeps the kids from drinking too much soda!

We try to do simple things at home with our 3 & 6 year old daughters. Our 6 year old is a great "plastic police woman", and always checks to see if it's a plastic that is recyclable. Now it's a game to see who catches an empty container first. We take the girls with us to the big recycling bin in Brimfield, so they can see us actually doing our final step to help the planet. They think it's great and it's a tiny step in the right direction.

I didn't know about the Super Why movie either - Thanks so much for sharing that!

As for teaching kids to recycle: We have 2 trashcans in the kitchen, 1 for regular garbage, and 1 for the recyclable items - my son and daughter check to see which items are on the recycling list and help put them in the appropriate can.
Also, my son loves to help smash aluminum soda cans. After he has bagged up quite a bit, he and his dad take them to be recycled. He gets to help with recycling, and he gets to keep whatever $ he gets (usually just a few $'s) to put in his bank.
A third thing we try to do is recycle "mistake" papers from the printer. You know the paper that just doesn't print correctly, etc. I try to save it in a folder and use the blank side for them to draw/color on.

That looks like a great movie!
My daughter is 3 and we have been recycling everything we can! She loves to smash cans and break down small boxes. We use the fabric grocery bags all the time. They are great for all kinds of things.

I know we do a lot of recycling at our house. We have clothing that we give away to others. I have taught my daughter who is now 23 if the clothing doesn't fit we will put it on freecycle or sharing is giving and let other use it as a way to give back to our community

We live just down the road from a drop-off to leave recyclable items. There are several dumpster bins that allow you to sort your recycling. We also have a Radio-Flyer red wagon. I think we will be loading up the wagon and go for a walk! We will be recycling, and a little more walking is good for us (especially with the knee surgeries my daughter and I have had), and it is good for the environment!

Thank you for the information about the movie!!! While I have no children of my own, I do however; work with children in many different capacities including teaching Sunday School. I will recommend they see the movie after I see it myself of course. ;o)

I love the "Green Theme" and work on educating everyone I come in contact with including children. A fun way I have learned to introduce going "GREEN" to children is to take them to the Discovery Museum exhibit: "Oh Rubbish" which teaches them to reduce – reuse – recycle – RETHINK! This is exactly what you were talking about on the air today. Kids and their parents can walk through a sort of landfill, play with the trash, listen to trash stories, and so much more.

Of course you need to follow through at home as well. The first step in each home is to reduce the size of your garbage can which should be smaller than your recycle containers. Next bring in two recycle bins one for "Containers" and the other for "Mixed Paper", which are the two biggest areas to recycle. Post laminated signs near those containers of what is acceptable and what is not along with a sign for drop-off points in your town. Also get a can crusher...Kids love this. Setting a good example is best and by all means spread the word with excitement!

Our family has recycled way before Peoria started curbside recycling. Our kids have always known to check plastics for their "recycle-ability". With Earth Day approaching, I had the recycle coordinator for Peoria County come and talk to my two Girl Scout troops about recycling. I found out we were not recycling everything at home that we could be. We have since almost doubled our recycling amount. We also recycle plastics, glass and aluminum from our pharmacy. Every little bit helps!!

Hey Jill! It's Lacey from the Getting Fit thing on the station. I've lost 17.8 pounds since 2/11. :) A friend and I started a blog about our journey at http://doublemuffintops.blogspot.com.
Take a look!

As for going green, one of the main things we've tried to do is use those reusable shopping bags. We've also made the switch to the spiral lightbulbs and are trying to be more careful about turning lights off. I've also explained to my son that this year I won't let him just play and play and play with the hose outside, because we don't want to waste water. I also take a reusable water bottle to work to use over and over.

Hey, everybody! I should have asked for your address when you posted your comment. That would be helpful, huh? Then again...you probably don't want to leave it on a blog site, do you? So, let's do this...if you're one of the first 25 people (besides me) to post a comment on this entry - whether you've already posted or have yet to post - please email me with your name, address, and phone number so I can send the reusable shopping bag to you in the mail. OK? My email address is jill@wcicfm.org! Thanks and thanks again for all the awesome comments!
